I have a similar problem: the nm-applet icon does not appear in gnome-panel.
However, on my system, the nm-applet process does start up when I log in.
Are you sure that the nm-applet process does not start ? Could you please

I am trying to use the DynamicPM option to increase running time while
on battery power. I created a xorg.conf file with the following
content:

The same problem exists with other power saving options:

Those errors are still in lucid. You need to be running a KDE session
to reproduce them.

I just tested lucid beta1+updates and the proposed -rt kernel is still a
2.6.31 version and PAE is not enabled.
