As noted above, this is fixed in the upstream v2.65 release and appears
to be fixed (including deprecation warnings) in the karmic repository.

The deprecation warnings have been fixed in v2.65, see:

I would like more information on the error though as I've never seen
that happen before. I tested on Hardy and Hardy LTS and it worked as
expected. I do see that it looks as if your target email address

On second reading, current versions of rss2email will be incompatible
with Python v3.x so if it can run at all, it was using Python v2.x.

Unless I misunderstand, why would we patch a package to fix a path issue
for one user's custom configuration?

The latest upstream version (v2.64) addresses this issue. If rss2email

rss2email should depend on sendmail
Peter,
Hmm. My main Linux box also runs Hardy, but I don't use the Ubuntu
package for rss2email personally. Can I enlist your help in finding

Possibly, but then rss2email would never work off the shelf on Ubuntu
without first configuring for SMTP. At least with the sendmail option
you have a chance of having sendmail present. All my Ubuntu boxes have
Postfix running and it includes a sendmail replacement.

Actually it doesn't depend on sendmail, but it is the default config.
You can configure it to use a regular mail server via the config.py
file.
From the docs:
# 1: Use SMTP_SERVER to send mail.
# 0: Call /usr/sbin/sendmail to send mail.
SMTP_SEND = 0
SMTP_SERVER = smtp.yourisp.net:25
