Although I'll try to stay with compositing enabled and all settings off.
Probably that won't stress much or at all this old hardware (pentium
e2160 and via s3 graphics) and could be the solution if this takes time
to be fixed.

I just installed gtk3.24.9 in fedora but the issues remains.
No matter which apps, the issues aren't consistent but it's either a black
background or redraw issues (either the icon moved to the side for a new one or
by changing icon themes and the old icon still partially visible underneath) or
