Thanks for your reply. I've moved away from Ubuntu Mate for the moment to
rules things out regarding data transfer/copying trouble I was having with
external drives.
I'm using Cinnamon just now without fault so I'm suspecting something amiss
with Mate.

Well, it’s a bug in a package installation somehow. I just tried to do a
“do-release-upgrade” on a machine running Nagios (with mysql) and it
took me a bunch of manual research and fixing. If it’s not ubuntu, it’s
mysql.
