I'm using 14.04.3 and the spdif crackles. My kernel is 3.16.0-53-generic
#72~14.04.1-Ubuntu.
I'm using a Asrock Z97 Extreme6 and a new cable. All other audio output
is fine but while getting a bit stream from USB the audio is rather
muted but usable.

I'm having the same problems. I need the proprietary driver because the
open source driver does not implement the computational part. Is there

Installing python-numpy_1.6.1-5_amd64.deb from Debian experimental gets
me past this hurdle and then we'll see if it breaks everything down the
line.
