In ubuntu hardy, when trying to install kmediafactory I get this:
$ sudo apt-get install kmediafactory
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if
Dependency should be mjpegtools instead of mpegtools.
Manual (forced) install with previously installed mpjegtools works
without problems...

The volume level was good in Ubuntu Feisty and before that, in MS
Windows XP SP2. No dual boot right now though (I deleted all non-linux
partitions before upgrading to Gustsy)...

I found a workaround from the KDE bug tracking system:

After establishing the connection, I manually run this command from
konsole:
$ dcop kded networkstatus setNetworkStatus NMNetwork 1
And after that, KDE applications are able to connect!

Bug is still present on my system.
When I connect to Internet using kppp (Cellular connection with Sierra
Wireless Card 580) knetworkmanager reports status as Disconnected (as
the ppp0 device seems not to be managed by nm) and kopete is not able
to connect to MSN.
If kdenetwork manager is stopp
Not yet (as of 04/12/2007). My connection via sierra wireless card using
kppp (device ppp0) is not shown when running nm-tool.

I'm able to reproduce error:
Kubuntu Feisty, fully updated. I was able to get rid of the problem
temporaly by deleting ~/.kde/apps/share/kopete but now is back.
The same account works without problems with amsn.

On my Dapper box (fully updated) the location of the pwc module is:
/lib/modules/2.6.15-27-386/kernel/drivers/usb/media/pwc/pwc.ko
