I've been updating to the latest upstream kernel whenever possible,
the system has since then become stable, and suspend is working properly again.

I still have crashes on AMD64, I have to restart firefox every hour or
so (depending on the number of flash tabs actually opened during that
time), to get flash running again.
It's still anoying but has said before, usable with some pains
