In my case (Ubuntu 9.10, 64 Bit, BOINC 6.10.17), nothing stops the BOINC
computation - not even typing in a terminal.

After upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 (64 Bit), my desktop gets unusable.
The top command shows that the process gnome-panel uses 90% and more
of CPU time. Login with another user: the same. Removing
~/.gconf
~/.gnome
and restart also doesn't help.
