Thanks for the swift reply. Purging grub-common (and manually removing
/boot/grub) following by an install of grub-pc indeed did the trick.
Most have gone wrong in one of the previous upgrades as you suggested.
Only one warning remained during install, but that easy to fix:

I've upgraded my htpc box several times but only recently i found out im
still on the generic 12.04 kernel. So i tried udating grub

GRUB >= 2.00 has been unpacked but not yet configured.
grub-mkconfig will not work until the upgrade is complete.

Thanks, the patch does work for an SiS m650.
I patched xserver-xorg-video-sis-lts-quantal and installed the xorg lts quantal
stack on Xubuntu 12.04 and it worked fine, although the EXA performance was not
as good as the XAA.

After having the same problems with The Fighter and Capote, some
experimentation with vlc actually got them working fine. It might work
for some of the other problem dvds, so it's worth trying at least.
(Replace /dev/sr0 with your own dvd drive in the command below: vlc's
dvdsimple option disables
Thanks Bryce, I tried the patch with The FIghter (Mark Wahlberg,
Christian Bale), which was a DVD which had the problem before, on
Xubuntu 12.04.2. I ran vlc in terminal and received a constant loop of
messages, which I had to quit with ctrl-c twice (although this version
of libdvdread didn't swal

I did the above a couple of times, but with the same result every time.

Problem
After filing this bug-report, i also threw in a "apt-get diet-upgrade" followed
by a reboot, but it still breaks. The final error message in the apt.log is:
