In my experience, at least, it takes much longer to start...
Approximately and unacceptably ±3 minutes longer?!? Am I missing
something?

I tried to print 3 copies of a PDF file on a Brother HL-3040CN printer,
setting "3" in the Evince Print dialog box. I had to switch off the
printer because it kept on printing more than only 3 copies.

Same here, clean installation of Kubuntu 12.04, ATI radeon 5xxx
seems to install successfully fglrx, when installing fglrx-update it
uninstalls both...
