@Barry For the record, FOSS does not imply software that is "free" as in
beer. The protagonists of free software - the folks at GNU - openly state
on www.gnu.org that it is perfectly acceptable to sell software "free" as
in "freedom" for money.

Fresh install of Precise amd64 here with the same issue... I have not
looked at the code for aptd or anything, but IMHO, it smells of a
Python2 -> Python3 transition issue?

I am changing the problem description to "os-prober requires partitions

A humongous bucketful of thanks to Matthew, Anthony, Robbie and all

After many months of despair, I have an interesting workaround!
My partition and OS setup is still the same - Ubuntu + Arch + Debian +
Slackware + Gentoo, each running only ONE kernel.
If I do a `sudo update-grub' in Ubuntu with everything else NOT mounted, I
still get the same old results - Ubu

I believe we are almost there to closing this bug... All we need is a way

everything working, and be able to install it on any other machine you wish

Also indeed, if one wants Ubuntu to go the gnome-world way, gnome-shell
is a mere 'apt-get install' away, so really, with Ubuntu, you get the
best of all worlds! - Any DE you want, you have it!

I don't think that Ubuntu is to be held accountable for making the
desktop "unusable" as it stands (I personally do not even share that
belief) - if anything, they have indeed added another "option", as
houstonbofh asks... the default being gnome-shell, nowhere close to the
classic desktop paradigm
I think instead of channeling their energy into identifying bugs IN
unity and fixing them, some regard Unity as a bug itself, which I
believe is fairly unreasonable as a critique. IMHO, the heart of the
matter lies in the very release model we have, though which is also one

Happened to me as well... I upgraded from Natty -> Oneiric, and while
everything was stable, nautilus crashed constantly. I read on Webupd8
that nautilus-open-terminal might be the cause:
http://www.webupd8.org/2011/10/things-to-tweak-after-installing-
ubuntu.html
I uninstalled it and things seem
ail! I had been trying to fiddle with the theme update but
had stalled for some time, since everyone was busy with Oneiric's release
and I got held up myself. I would very much like to help squash this as soon
as I can and I am emailing you with issues.

Hi Matthew and Anthony,
Sorry for my delayed reply - I was desperately caught up working out
some results for a grant proposal, and I have somewhat of a breather
now. I will start out by getting hold of and fiddling with the

Hi Matthew,
First of all many thanks for following up with this bug diligently (as
well as for your other work all this time, which I keep noticing on the
ubuntu-doc lists). Now that the artwork has been supplied, I would like
to help out with the process of transitioning to the new theme. I see
