The problem finally got me too after I've updated my system yesterday.
Just the regular update, no upgrade, and now my computer doesn't show
any BIOS screen, any GRUB screen oder login screen anymore.
It basically shows absolutely nothing until I get a weird greenish
screen (picture a screen fille
Same issue here, the last upgrade of 11.04 broke my system as well. No

I disagree that the bug has been fixed in hardy before the release. I
have downloaded the live CD two days ago, installed it, and I have it

driving me nuts actually.
Wow, and this bug is almost 8 months old judging by the date on t
Same problem here with the Fritz Card DSL SL, but this omission concerns
all Fritz Cards. It's easy and convenient to set up in Hardy, so let's
work on that regression in Intrepid and make it just as easy.

I'm in the process of fixing this on my computer. Someone forgot to include the

Ok, I have news concerning this thing. Today, for the first time, I had a

It's become a reflex to just restart X when I'm ready to shut down my computer,

Thanks for your answer Tom,
It was originally my plan to only work with the development version of
Hardy until the final release, and then to do a clean install.
Unfortunately, it turns out the kernel on the final release is buggy and
won't boot on my computer. Something about a pointer reference,
Alright guys, it's fixed in compiz 0.7.4.

Just an update, I still have that very error almost three weeks after
the initial post. I barely can remember when I was able to logout of
GNOME normally for the last time. I mean, without having to restart X
with Ctrl+Alt+Delete first.
Am I alone with that bug, or what?

Hey, thanks for your post.
Well, I'm having issues with the latest 2.6.24-15 kernel, so I haven't
updated my system this week, but I see no relevant compiz package in the
list of available updates for my system so I'm pretty positive I have
the latest. As of now, I have compiz version 0.7.2 instal
Also new here, 2.6.24-12 boots just great but the new kernel 2.6.24.15 freezes
at bootup.
The line that hangs says:

ALC882 is my sound chip, this takes place somewhere around the
initialization of my Hauppage with a cx88 something
It's me again, yeah, it's a cx8800 chip on my Hauppage, lshw returns:

Yeah, that was also my suggestion in a previous post on 2008-03-23,
there should be a way to force the network manager to tell everyone it's

I confirm, it is working now. Did something get updated? Or was I too dumb to
make it work?
With kernel 2.6.24-12 and network-manager 0.6.6, this is what I did for a ppp

1) Start System->Administration->Network

It apparently just got fixed via the network manager...
I just got a monster update going, of about 200MB, and although the updated
kernel just won't boot, the network manager got out of my way when using the
older kernel. It's either a new network manager, now 0.6.6 or a new capiutils

Actually, I'm gonna have to agree with Kristian Erik after all.
You see, at first, since Pidgin, Evolution and Firefox 3 were concerned by that

I think, at least, there should be an option in the network manager to
manually override it and set it to a fixed "online" state if you choose
