I did an apt-get dist-upgrade yesterday and received a new version of
hplip (3.10.2-2ubuntu2). unfortunately, this did not fix my problem; the
scanner is still only detected when logged in as root (for example by
scanimage -L) but not as a regular user. In addition running sane as
root still crashe

I'm afraid reinstalling hplip didn't fix the problem. The thing is, if
the root cause of the problem is just permissions, why can't I scan as
root?

Yes I have unplugged and re-plugged the device after re-install. I've
also done the same after running the consolekit reinstall you suggest -
still no luck. It basically still thinks that there is no device, even
though lsusb clearly shows a device.

Thanks for that. Not sure if it helps but I also tried scanning as root
and it seemed to have crashed sane.
Wrt to the file you requested, it does exist indeed (psb). Will try
reinstalling the package now.

Bit of a me too post: I just did a fresh install of Lucid, used the
restricted drivers to install the current nvidia driver but get the same
problem as Federico. Some details:
$ lspci | grep -i VGA

and had to stop playing music from emacs (bongo/emms were using mpg123

yes, sorry, that was an issue as well - the experience was just not as
"smooth" really (even emacs GTK was a bit flickery!). Can't speak for
the 9x drivers - didn't have to go that far down - but I must say I had
no problems as of yet with v173, so I recommend those.

very similar here, with nvidia: had loads of problems with the 180
drivers. removing proprietary drivers worked well - no crashes at all -
but of course, no compiz niceness. now trying the nvidia 173 driver. no
problems as of yet (> 1h).
