Same issue here (ubuntu 12.04).
Bypassed using ffmpegthumbnailer:
1. sudo apt-get install ffmpegthumbnailer
2. sudo cp /usr/share/thumbnailers/totem.thumbnailer ~/totem.thumbnailer .bak
3. sudo gedit /usr/share/thumbnailers/totem.thumbnailer
4. replace the text with this one:
[Thumbnailer Entry]

Ubuntu 10.10 64bit
digiKam: 1.4.0
Digikam is still running after closing.
After rebooting all sessions still running at shutdown try to start.
