You are right, I had forgotten about the PPA and hadn't paid close
enough attention when posting the bug originally.
Please accept my apologies.

Ok I have been able to rollback the xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu package
from 19.1.0+git2104271106.aedbf47~f~mesarc0 to 19.1.0-1, and can confirm
that the issue didn't reappear.
** Attachment added: "Output of apt-cache showpkg xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu"
Yes, of course leave this with me and I'll report back later.

I am happy to report that this issue looks to have been resolved.
The roll back took a bit of time to do, and I am still not sure that I
did it fully correctly. However it did the trick.
I also note that there were some subsequent updates to both the Mesa
libraries, and xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu
Certainly.
I might not be able get to it for a day or two, but will let you know
how I get on.
Many thanks,
Mark.

The issue appears to have started around the 21st April, and apart from
a couple of browser upgrades some misc packages, there appear to have
been a number of Mesa related upgrades (see attached).

Bugs,
It seems I may have spoken too soon...
So I got the both the printer and the scanner working, however on next
boot, it had reverted right back to only the being able to print.
Any attempt to scan resulted in the "Can't communicate with the device"
error message.
Interestingly, *something*
In my case, I was experiencing the same issues with a fresh install of
20.04[1], for HP PhotoSmart 5520 (MFD).
I was generally able to print, it was a bit more finicky than it had
been previously, however scanning didn't work. Simple Scan noted an
error message about being unable to communicate
It looks like you might be on the money with that one. Removing the
icedtea6-plugin package certainly seems to have had an effect.
