It was a long time ago and I'm not a frequent flyer with Python or
Ubuntu (I spend most of my time on the dark side programming in C#). But
I'll be using both over the next couple of weeks, so I'll test it again
and let you know.

I restarted from the CD and the fat32 partition was marked as
unaccessible. So I re-ran the installation, this time ensuring that the
fat32 partition was not in the list of mounts.
All now installed fine.
