I would suggest Ubuntu updates to OpenSC 0.12.X, sample debian folder is
available from http://martinpaljak.net/download/opensc/deb/ At the same
time work is underway to get Debian to update the package as well. A new
release of OpenSC 0.12.1 is imminent in the nearest days.

Apparently this is a bug in the pcsc-lite reader driver of the Broadcom
5800 reader, not OpenSC. If the reader (driver) does not want to talk to
the card, there's not much OpenSC can do to fix this.
