It's definitely not fixed here.
On top of having files in random order, certain files do not even appear!

I have this problem as well (lucid x86).
It seems to have appeared when I moved my music collection from an ext3
partition to a 1.5TB USB drive that uses NTFS.

Why should it be required to have root or sudo access in order to install
software?
On some machines, I may not want to give such power to users for security
reasons, but those users would probably be happy to be able to install software
in their home directory from pre-compiled dot deb
The problem is, actually, that root privileges are needed to install any
package.
Be it with gdebi or what it wraps.

Binary package hint: gdebi
gdebi doesn't allow to install dot deb packages if the user can't use sudo or
other ways to grant himself root rights.
For a lot of applications, there should be no need to have such rights to
install them.
