After a clean install and installing the various packages one by one I
found that it has nothing to do with depmod apparently. I just happen to
always install fglrx along with kernel restricted modules. All that it
is is that the restricted modules are needed in order for the wireless
networking
I am using fglrx and it partially works. I at least get the correct
resolution of 1440x900 so thats good. The issues that still exist with
the fglrx drivers are also completely out of our hands so I didn't
bother opening another bug about a problem we can't fix.

the upgrade to 7.2 had no effect. although oddly enough messages in the
log file still print out the 7.1.1 version number even though 7.2 is
installed. The log files seem mostly the same but I am attaching the new
ones anyway just in case.

gone away. At this point I think the best thing I can do is do a clean
reinstall and see if the problem happens again and take it from there.

I will poke around my bios a bit as well and see if there is anything in
there that may be disabled.
I have an Asus M32N-SLI Deluxe/Wireless motherboard... if that helps at
all. I have to install a BIOS update that just came out a few days
ago... should not make any difference in this case but
module kvm-amd is loaded.
there are no kvm dmesg errors.
I also tried to force it:

and still get the same error message. It is looking for /dev/kvm and it
does not exist.

I think I found the issue...
I have a WD MyBook External FireWire hard drive
(http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=224)
hooked up to my machine. When it is plugged in the 2.6.20-3.4 kernel
will not boot.
I unplugged it and I was able to boot with 2.6.20-3.4.
