the screen shows all scrambled
Try to estimate the corners of where you need to take the screenshot

The captured image looks ok
The problem is trying to capture the imag
Issue is reproducible for me on Ubuntu (Kubuntu) 17.04:

Actually the problem is that kdebase-workspace-bin is not a required
package. you can install kdm and much of the rest of KDE without this
package and you get a blank screen.
install kdebase-workspace-bin and you're good.

When I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic today (2009-08-31), my KDE panel
settings were lost... upon login to KDE the panel was reset to defaults.
I had to re-create my panel and all was good.
