So, I think it's safe to say that it is probably working correctly as
your post got me thinking that it might be a hardware problem. I took
the laptop apart today and sure enough one of the two headphone jacks is
damaged. I will probably de-solder it this weekend and that should fix
the problem. I

I am pretty sure that this was not the case... I may have had it plugged
in though as that is the only way to get sound. I think this is an Alsa
problem and not only an Ubuntu problem as I installed Fedora 14
alongside Natty and I have the same problem there as well.

I have tried using the models listed in http://paste.ubuntu.com/238572/
for STAC92HD71 and STAC92HD71. No resullts. I am making sure to turn up
the channels in alsamixer and after I run alsa force-reload I still have
no sound out of the speakers.
