Just to add that I've also had the same problem as Christian Neumair -
namely a Grub error 18 on 7.04 due to trying to access the default file.
A more helpful error message would be good - I went through all sorts of
things before I worked out what was causing it.

My live CD is doing the same thing except that the GUI has not stopped.
I am using an Nvidia card though (Nvidia Geforce 6600 w/ 512 MB).
I can close the window that hangs at 53%, and I can also stop the
installation. Running ubiquity in the terminal has no different effect.
