Issue confirmed. Manual connection of wired internet restores connectivity without having to use dhclient, etc. Network manager is still running in the background. it seems NetwrokManager was renamed to network-manager in /etc/init.d but a backup version of the old script was left. Ok to attempt to recreate i disconnected my keyboard, and deleted the trust. I can now not reconnect using the applet as it crashed with an out of memory error in a call to dbus (checking for a valid path for a setting iirc).
