The solution that worked best for me on my U100 was the blacklist one. This reduced the applet from coming on to a few seconds, and it gave me back access to usb ports. But I do agree with the other posters that this and the usb bug are showstoppers for the average user and the advice should be

I don't know if I'm the only one who has experienced this issue, but there are a number of postings in the Ubuntu development forum about sound problems in 9.10 alpha. I'm curious why you think this belongs with Gnome? Could the problem not be with another sound module, or even with VirtualBox,
