I can confirm this bug in Debian testing.
As this bug is probbly mutter related (as stated here:

while upgrading to Maverick, nano / vim / vim-tiny throw the same error
because they cannot configure (sry in german because of using german
distribution) :
"update-alternatives: Fehler: Alternativen-Link /usr/bin/editor wird
bereits von edito verwaltet."
then i tried dpkg-
