Having spent the day fiddling, an update on this.
This is not a hardware fault as an install of 10.10 works fine (with
gnome and kde)
I updated to 11.04 and the problem came back in KDE, I'm not able to log
into unity or gnome so I can't test whether it works outside of KDE!
I tried xine and gst
I'll double check the hardware and get back to you.

It sounds as if it is being played on a radio with a broken speaker -
notes are blurred and distorted, and there is almost white noise. also
oddly, there is a time signature problem, a track will speed up and slow
down, and it seems that this depends on other processes that are being
carried
I think there are 2 things going on here-my problem has been solved by
recent updates to Mesa, etc as I have come to the conclusion that it was
an openGL problem.

I have stopped the crashing by turning off the compositing effects.
After reading around this it seems that there is problem with the ATI
drivers (surprise!).
This can probably be ignored/moved until the ATI driver is sorted.

I am also getting the same error. I tried the debugging instructions,
but got the error

which makes the rest a bit tricky.

just realised the commands after kwin crashed were meant to be run in
gdb
the outputs were:

I think buffering problems sounds likely as it is only in Firefox and epiphany

Apologies, I have been ill and missed the email.
At the time I reported the bug I had upgraded from Gutsy and had at no
time tweaked any sound settings. Realplayer worked fine in gutsy - I do
not recall ever having FF2 in Hardy.
Since then I have reinstalled Hardy and still have the same problem.

Yes I can unfortunately.
As I put in the bug report it doesn't like the card reader in my Aria case
either. I don't know if it is the Asus board that is the particular problem
but it is top of the list of suspects.
