I'm seeing this same issue on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS using OpenSSH 1.0.1f.
mab@source:~$ ssh -v mtaxxx
OpenSSH_6.6.1, OpenSSL 1.0.1f 6 Jan 2014

Update: it works if I change the cipher (to blowfish, in this instance).
Doesn't work using aes128.
