The 2.6.20-15.24 kernel from http://people.ubuntu.com/~bcollins/kernels fixed a problem I had with my second SATA drive disappearing, in case this happens to anybody else - not quite related to PATA, as the only PATA device in the system is a CDROM, but this was the closest item I could find match
