I can confirm also that my desktop is very unresponsive with the latest
ubuntu release 10.04. The issue seems to happen randomly and can be
present right after boot-up or later. Since there are times when
everything works responsive, I do not blame my processors performance
capability.

I experience this bug too when I do backup large data to my nfs server.
I used Areca as a backup utility. I want to backup about 5GB of data.
After a while (more than an hour), the eth0 times out. See my syslog for
details.

I can confirm the problem still exists on karmic beta (desktop). The
buttons are not missing all the time, after a reboot the might appear
again. I didn't find out yet what the cause for the disappearance is.
But it happens per default right after installing the OS.

I can confirm that problem. I'm testing right now with karmic beta
(desktop), together with an jaunty server. I didn't try yet if this
problem doesn't occur without samba, but right know, while I'm using
samba, it happens all the time while copying large files (about 1GB or
even smaller, I didn't e
This bug still exists with karmic beta. Suspending works (at least it
seems so, the power lamp is blinking sleepy), but when I then want to
resume (by pushing the power button), it hangs somewhere. I cannot
power-off the laptop except by removing the battery. Thus: same
behaviour as reported above.
Dear Leann,
I just tested the Karmic 9.10 Alpha 3 as LiveCD. I could suspend the
laptop, but, unfortunately, I had exactly the same problem as with
Jaunty:
I have to remove my accu in order to get the system reboot again.
Do you need any log files which could help to identify the bug?

With the attached conf file I have not experienced any
crackling/stottering so far. It seems that the most important option for
my laptop (Toshiba Satellite M40) is 'realtime-priority = 0'. I don't
know what's the disadvantage of setting this priority to the max, but it
works for me.

Hi all,
I did also a test with kernel 2.6.28-12-generic #43 on my toshiba

I edited the following in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf:
resample-method = trivial
default-fragment-size-msec = 5
After that I did:

Hi Daniel,
I changed the daemon.conf accordingly (see attachement). The speaker-
test worked properly, I heard alternating noise out of my left and right
speaker. When I did a reboot after that and tested my sound with
System->Preferences->Sound->"Sound Events: Test" I heard at the

Martin,
Sorry for my misleading comment. In fact my comment no. 54 reported only
a success right after the update. But after some minutes the problem
occurred again.
And I have to add that after rebooting that the crackling even got
worse. I get the impression that the problem seems to be solved

Update of today for Jaunty Beta included also some changes in Alsa and

But I can still produce the crackling when playing too much around, meaning
having open several windows with more than one source of sound active.

I still got some crackling after a while playing MP3 with Totem, but

I did an update today and I still have that same crackling problem with

Hi Leann,
Here is the information:
My system is right now (on 2009-03-29) up to date for Jaunty. The
problem still occurs.
The problem happens during waking up after a Suspend. The falling into
sleep seems to work properly, meaning that at the end the Power-LED is
slowly blinking.
