The work around postest by blackest knight works for skype , but it is
only temporary solution isn't it?(it does not resolve the problem with
all other sound recording after all)

Not a bug, but maybe an area with room for imporvement.

running an upgrade, nor would I have known how much would be needed.

I noticed the lack of association too.
One one install attempt with a downloaded version all of the
functionality was there but I crashed ubuntu later on when i used that
3-d screensaver tool beryl.
Otherwise I have quite simply stopped using Windows except when I want
to play my mmorpg online
I didnt use my native drive until the wine install to the linux
partition fAiled many times.
I have switched to freespire for now to see if i have any luck.
