I'm afraid Intel Macs are not currently supported by ubiquity, although
you may be able to get them to work using the alternate install CD. See
bug 52779.

Installer crashes when trying to execute grub on hd0 (which is
nonsense because the iMac has no normal hard drive; the internal drive
is mounted as sda.
Further the GRUB loader won't work probably because the normal spread
version may still have the bug that hangs the system
First of all: it's most user-friendly to preinstall an OS. Installation
is a very awful procedure. If you'd be forced to install Windows on your
own it may lose at least 10 percent of its market share... Even
installing Ubuntu takes time; BTW: a good OS installer would ask first
for all settings
