I tried this advice:
rename update-initramfs and place a shellscript

Then run dpkg --configure -a
It worked, so that dpkg --audit now returns with no errors. I can
still only boot in rescue mode, and fixing the packages, fixing the X

Thanks for you help - I see what you are trying to do to correct old
versus new udev behaviour.
Unfortunatly, it did not fix the problem.
The script is in place, and I can run it with command line argument
-help and udevadm answers.
But the error message:

I found some more info here:

but it seems to be slightly off. In my case dpkg --configure -a
crashes. Any ideas?

Well, I have the same problem. Can't use the GUI (as some suggests), the

I tried to clear the locales and reboot - now the server isn't event

I just finished testing 8.10 alpha 3 on my IBM T20 - disk image called:
intrepid-alternate-i386.iso
I ran the alternate CD, selected nothing special besides UTC time and
Danish keyboard settings.
First boot: Black screen, dead keys.
Second boot: ESC - recovery - Fix X server - resume - Perfect
I tested this on the T20 with 8.10-alpha 3, no software updates (yet).
When running the recovery boot option, power off works.
But with the normal boot (no options or menu selections) the last lines
show:
* Will now halt
halt: Unable to iterate IDE devices: No such file or directory

Ubuntu 8.10-alpha 3 with updates.
I did at fresh install of intrepid 8.10 alpha 3 i386 on a IBM Thinkpad
T20. Fixed a X-server problem using the new rescue panel. Ran update
manager and installed everything.
Next boot: Black screen (again). Booted with rescue, fixed the
I ran the memory test which showed a lot of errors.
I did disconnect the PC for some time (from the AC adapter) and now the
bios-menu is back. The screen still goes black after reboot with the
newest kernel (-5 as above), and the PC is locked up so hard that not
even CAPS LOCK works any more.
This bug report is related to bug #159599 (about wrong X-server driver
or failure in it)

Thinkpad T20 also has this problem. Using acpi=force as a kernel
parameter does not solve the problem. apm support is not in the kernel,
so I havent tried that.

This problem is also present on IBM Thinkpad T20 series. I had to change
to the VESA driver, on 7.04 (Edgy) as well as 7.10 (Gutsy).
In both cases, I installed using the Alternate-CD
I changed to VESA by booting into text mode and I then gave the command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
