Captain Chaos,
I too have an NVidia video card (GeForce 8400 GS), which worked immediately 
after I installed Ubuntu 10.10 to my hard drive a few days ago. After the 
installation, I chose to use Xinerama for my dual monitor setup, and after I 
restarted, I had a white/gray background behind my network icon panel instead 
of the normal dark grey. I've yet to find a solution. No other panel icons have 
this problem either. It seems as though we are facing the exact same problem. 
I'll let you know if I find anything.
