I had this problem - the hard freeze version. 3570k processor as well.
Installing version 2.19.0 of the intel video driver seems to have fixed
it.

I am seeing the same bug in Ubuntu Jaunty. It does appear as though it
is attempting to load twice. I'm not using KDE as I'm just running a
minimal install with XBMC. My remote is working yet it shows a fail
message at every reboot.

Seems to be fixed. Ran the following to remove nic-firmware:
# apt-get remove linux-image-generic
# apt-get remove linux-firmware
# apt-get remove nic-firmware
I then ran updater and it updated fine, no crashing. Everything seems
to be fine now. Thanks for your help.
