I get no error when it doesn't work. The mute box stays checked and the
little red/white x stays in place. As I say this is only when the
machine first starts with the volume control in the mute position.
If I try to move the volume slider first then the slider returns to the

This bug is about ath9k completely lunching itself, so much that it
can't reset the chip when you remove the module and reinsert it. That is
most certainly a fault with the driver.
Network manager might trigger the fault, but the driver shouldn't
misbehave so badly.

When I delete the /usr/lib/dri/r600_dri.so file from the stock Alpha-5
libgl1-mesa-dri package (7.6.0~git20090817.7c422387-0ubuntu3) then X
will start up correctly with DRI enabled using both the Radeon and
Radeon HD drivers.
AIGLX reverts to software rendering as expected.

Tested the Xorg edgers system.
With the xserver-xorg-video-ati driver, the microcode works and fixes
the drmCommandBuffer: -22 fault but I can't see what I am typing in the
terminal window so there is a rendering flaw there.
With the xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd driver, everything seems fine

So the regression lies with the mesa package.

After some hefty debugging it appears that downgrading libasound2 to
version 1.0.20-3ubuntu3 restores the digital outputs. The regression on
3ubuntu4.

Can you try switching DRI off.
You can download the attached Xorg.conf file and put in in /etc/X11.
Then log off and back on again.
If the server works with DRI switched off, then that is this bug. If it
doesn't you'll need to log another one with 'ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-
video-ati' as it may
Debugging suggests this is ALSA related.
