Very similar to the problem posted, but my system was just fine when
using 10.04. it was only when I updated to 10.10 that the freezes
started.
There is a forum thread with a number of people who have the same problem
describing their hardware. the URL is

I fixed it that same day and I have yet to run into the same issue since then.
