I had the same problem, and also couldn't figure out how to solve it. I
ended up re-installing from the 9.10 LiveCD and that make the system
work again. (Luckily, I have my /home and / partitions separate so I
didn't lose any important data.)

I've been getting the "Fatal server error: Couldn't bind memory for BO
front buffer" error as well on Jaunty with my old laptop's "Intel
Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device". The error goes
away for me by adding
Option "Legacy3D" "false"
to the Device section.
