I experienced this today, while upgrading from 18.04 to 20.04 over ssh.
Luckily, my command 'sudo reboot now' wasn't executed and while I
googled and read this, the upgrade continued.

indeed an extremely serious bug. I've had no other choice but to change

I'm able to change from Ubuntu Unity Plugin to Static Application Switcher
however that leaves me without any option to launch programs. At least I've not
been able to figure out how to launch programs.

I don't know how Opera calls Evince (how do I find out?). I've not
tested with another mail client. However, as I wrote in my previous
post, this is probably related to Opera rather than Evince since Okular
also fails. I've filed a bug report to Opera.

This is a confirmed issue with Xubuntu 8.10.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf appears to be empty (!)

Not reproducible. I suspect this has been related to the CD's I've been
using. I've both a new stack of CD's and have changed to Linux Mint 6
RC1, but hav not had this problem in a long while.
