I followed Guy Begin's advice (thanks!) and I can confirm that it does solve
the issue for me.
The issue persisted through at least two kernel updates. Currently running:

recognise SDHC cards anymore (with Ubuntu 10.04 it did; same card, same
machine, Windows Vista works fine).

I'm getting a similar warning on my Dell Vostro 1310 with a Samsung
Drive.
Palimpsest reports something about drive failing and drive has many corrupt
sectors. What it doesn't like is the number of the current pending sector.
smartctl does not indicate any problem:

I have now booted a few times successfully into kernel 2.6.28-13-generic
#45-Ubuntu, but a few minutes ago I had the same problem (lockup at boot
at the gdm prompt). So the problem is still there (I'm constantly
updating my system). Right now working again with 2.6.27-11.

have a separate modules directory (2.6.27-11, 2.6.28-11, 2.6.28-13). The

Update: the purge/reinstall does only fix the problem temporarily.
A few minutes ago I tried to visit a website which uses flash: no flash,
the site gives me a link for downloading flash. After doing
purge/reinstall as described above and restarting firefox the site
works.
In both situations I do
