For some reason this seems to be hardware-dependant. I have so far
"collected" four USB SATA docking stations or adapters. I do not see
this bug on USB 2 at all (ICH 10). On USB 3 (Renesas/NEC) I see it on
one of two docking stations. On that one, I see it every time, and on
the other never at all.
Oh, forgot to add info: I run Lucid, and have the 3.0.26 kernel
(oneiric-generic) (otherwise I get loads of stale endpoint errors on USB
3...).

I have Lucid (10.04 LTS) and I confirm the problem.
I can precisely describe the hardware in question, it is a PCI Express
USB 3 card by manufacturer Delock. It uses the VIA VLI 800 chipset. Hard
disks in USB-3-to-SATA adapters are only detected upon boot time. Rarely
a plug&pray detection works,
Sigh. Another bug that just stays open and nobody does anything to it...

After reading lots and lots of bug reports on the Internet, I tried to
load, remove and/or blacklist pcspkr and/or snd-pcsp, to no avail. The
speaker setting in alsamixer remains tied to internal and external
speakers at the same time. When I disable the internal speaker, the
externals go off, too.
Installing the backported Oneiric kernel (currently 3.0.0.26.14) fixes
the problem for me. But that's not the standard kernel for Lucid, you
have to start Synaptic and manually select and install linux-headers-
generic-lts-backport-oneiric (and *image*) to correct this.

Moving to kernel 3 solved it for me, try installing (via Synaptic)
linux-headers-generic-lts-backport-oneiric (and *image*) which will give
you a 3.0.0.26.14 at the moment.

This is fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on an Intel ICH10 machine
(quadcore), a Fujitsu Esprimo P5731. It uses the Intel 1000e onboard
network adapter. Internet connection is established through a DSL
router/modem that does NAT, so for all local PCs internet is just
traffic
Clarification of workaround #2: Network has to be disconnected
_manually_ by pulling the network connector. Disconnecting through the
GUI does not heal the error, but simply pulling the plug does.
