My issue wasn't fixed until I restarted gnome-settings-daemon. Here's what I did, it works 100% of the time, but its a total hack. Go in synaptic, reinstall nautilus. I made a one liner shell script that runs when my computer starts: sleep 5; ps -aef | grep gnome-settings-daemon | grep -v grep

I installed the patch and rebooted. I removed my working around of running gnome-panel and gnome-wm on boot and sadly, in netbook mode, no panels. This patch might fix in classic mode, however my netbook mode still seems to be broken. -- Switch Desktop Mode corrupted settings
