I tested this in Xubuntu and Lubuntu 15.04 and then in Xubuntu 14.04.
Xubuntu 14.04 recognized ALL the problem DVDs that 15.04 could not
recognize.
I tried using upstart at boot instead of systemd, the problem still
persisted in 15.04.

I noticed this slowness from Ubuntu 13.04 onwards. 12.04 was a lot
better though no speed demon. From 13.04 to 14.04 the transfer starts
more or less ok and then slows, almost stops dropping down to about
600kb/s, then speeds up again to about 3 mb/s flucuating up and down
from 1.2 mb/s to 3 mb/s.
The problem for me seems to have disappeared with later upgrades in
12.04 (12.04.2 & 12.04.3). So far, no problem with 13.04. Just installed
13.10. Have yet to test printing with on the Ricoh MPC 2051.

I just made a two-copy print in Ubuntu 12.04 using Libreoffice and a pdf

Thank you. I will check Monday when I return to work and see if it's the
cups package. I may try rolling back to the old cups package used in
11.10 and see if this solves the problem.

Bugs,
So far, I have resorted to using Ubuntu 9.10 or Linux Mint 8 for X264
encoding with Avidemux. The extreme slowness is still evident in 10.04
or Linux Mint 9.
On my old machines (single-core), X264 encoding is about 1.9 fps or less
in 10.04 but about 9 fps in 9.10.

kompozer keeps crashing
You're absolutely right. I renamed the html file edited by 0.8a4 to
xhtml and the problem was solved.
I'm sending the files to you anyway so that you can have a look and try
them out.
In the meantime, I will just rename them to xhtml.
Very much appreciated - thank you.

I was actually referring to a bug in 0.8a4. I should not have put the
comment here. However, I will send a more detailed step-by-step
description with sample files in the near future. Thanks.
