Thank you Bill, problem solved. I got the same empty place holder, for my nvidia card. The empty file was NVIDIA-Settings.desktop. I removed the file and the problem is gone. I remember creating that placeholder when I installed the nvidia driver to get it to work on my laptop (HP) which is
