I have never seen this crash again since that one time. I suppose it was
a race condition between two instances of the daemon running
simultaneously.
It might be safe to close this issue as it appears to only happen if a
gnome session/Xorg crash occurs prior to this.

The last installation steps fails when installing grub in the MBR,
because it cannot detect the underlying grub device. Manually binding
both the /proc and /sys folder fixed it for me:
