After some further investigation, the problem was due to some unsolved
dependencies, that strangely not appeared in synaptic package manager. After
removal and reinstallation of a bunch of packages the upgrade went fine.
May be the error message returned by the upgrade process in such cases

The only way to get rid of those freezes is to comment out Load dri in
xorg.conf. Maybe this should be the default for all modern ATI cards as
a workaround?

I have the same problem when trying to sync a folder containing subfolders from
a USB key (vfat filesystem so far I know) and a folder on the HD (ext3
filesystem) by copying (using ctrl+c/crtl+v) from USB to HD. Some files in some
subfolders are not copied. No error message occurs.
