since upgrade to oreinic, the packages mencoder doesn't support x264.

i've encountered similar problem + a special bonus : couldn't change
preferences.
launching empathy in a terminal to get the error message reported that
.config/dconf/user could not be written
mkdr .config/dconf solved the issue !

could i suggest that when you right click on the icon in unity dash, a "show
all windows" link being avaliable.
it would be a good functionality imho.
