The bug still exist on Gutsy (20070629) Kubuntu 32 bits.
I confirm that installing libgl1-mesa-dri and Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, enables DRI.

Although /usr/lib/php5 still contains 20060613+lfs on Gutsy, making an
/var/www/apache2-default with an index.php with phpinfo().
I did look through the modules, then added php5-mysql
deconfiguring network interfaces is in /etc/init.d/networking from netbase
package, so setting to netbase.
Could you test with Gutsy Tribe-2 and tell if this still happen?

I would confirm, but original poster seems to have a network timeout on getting

Could you open a console, do 'ls /var/crash' and then:
apport-retrace usplash.crash filename where usplash.crash filename is the
name as it appears in the output of ls /var/crash.
And then attached the usplash.crash file.,, please.
Soon this won't be necessary anymore, but because you are using
well, you probably need to 'sudo apt-get install apport-retrace' and use 'sudo
apport-retrace usplash.crsh filename . Now that I think about it, maybe you
even have to edit /etc/sources.list and add a:

medium or higher
making previous comment in a patch
Just this seems enough to make both dpkg-reconfigure -plow and -pmedium to work
(validate correctly nice value, don't have tested if nice value is really
applied to the server).
still some warning at medium level:
Use of uninitialized value in join or string
I begin to think the problem WAS NOT with validate_nice_value,
but rather with the priority of debconf.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure --force -plow x11-common seems
to work but sudo dpkg-reconfigure --force -pmedium x11-common
seems to bug.

WHy would anyone think this is a problem with x11-common?
I have the feeling apt-get upgrade run in a non-interactive debconf
level. Pretty much convinced right now, that the bug have to do with
current priority level of debconf. And the fact that

a possible fix for this bug there.

Mainly, to replace:
if [ $? -ne 2 ]; then
by:
if [ $? -eq 1 ]; then
in validate_nice_value () of the config script.
