I know that the alternate-cd sometimes differs from the Live-cd.
But I don't know enough to help further, and I don't have a spare partition at
the moment.

Just tested the same daily-live, and as you would expect it does not boot on my
computer.
During startup the kernel 2.6.2-7-generic is used.
This problem didn't happen before on my computer, and I started in 2003 with
linux (Debian).
