OK---I found the problem! In the integration settings tab I changed
theme from "Autodetect" to "Radiance" and now everything works.
So the issue is that having the theme on "Autodetect" causes the

I believe that this IS a 32-bit to 64-bit issue. My 32 to 64 bit
evolution restore has this problem. Evolution crashes while importing
the mail boxes. A 64- to 64-bit restore does not result in this crash
and the settings get imported properly.

I can confirm that commenting out lines 341-344 of the /usr/bin/compiz script
has completely resolved my rendering issues. I haven't experienced any problems

On a fresh install of a fully updated hardy, I find I still need the 99
-non-free-nvidia hack to get things to work properly. Without it,
suspend works, but causes compiz to sometimes go whitescreen (requires X
server kill to fix).
With 99-non-free-nvidia, everything works fine.

I confirm this bug. Window drawing is sluggish with either metacity or
compiz.
It might be a GTK issue. Simple non-GTK windows (emacs, xterm) draw very
quickly, while simple GTK windows (calculator, appearance manager) draw
slowly. Evolution draws very slowly (1 second to unmaximize).

Regarding checking DB integrity at startup: good idea, but it may not
fix this bug, since the database IS valid when the gnome-session
trackerd starts.

Here is a more extensive test with a log.
First, I disabled trackerd in gnome-session. I wiped the cache, and
started trackerd from the command line. I waited until it got an idle
status. I logged in and out many times, repeating this procedure. It
would always return to Idle status after a minute

ax | grep trackerd" DOES show the redirect to tracker.log, but
tracker.log doesn't grow.
To answer your other question, no, Desktop is not a symlink. It does,
however, have a symlink in it that points to a subdirectory in the home
folder (i.e. ~/Desktop/a.pdf points to ~/talks/a.pdf)
It also contains some files owned by root.

It is 100% reproducible, i.e. it happens every single time I start
indexing from scratch. I notice it after ~1 day or so. The other thing
I'm sure of is that file-meta.db keeps on growing through the infinite
loop. I've let it go on and on to see how long it keeps on doing it, and
at one point the
