This was corrected when i additionally set the:
System->Preferences->Screen resolution to the same value. Still the log
on screen remained the wrong type and my Mathematica program showed
fonts as holes in paper and i had to use black background to see them.

The same here with ATI Radeon 9200 PRO card and Nokia 446Xpro monitor.
The display is even set perhaps to Liquid crystal mode when booting.
The cursor disappears too. When corrected (difficult to resolve) by the
menu: Screens and graphics, it forgets it in the next boot.

Click the panel at down by pressing the right mouse button and set it
vertical and you will find the menu and correct the display.

Display was set to LCD instead of Nokia 446Xpro though it is recognized
in startup. The display width had to be reduced to find the menu and
continue to correct it.
